Why do a lot of idiots think that gore is scary but psychological scares aren't?

When a movie is rated PG-13, people bash it because it will lack blood and gore. How is blood and gore scary? It's the ghastly and unearthly images that are scary, not gore. I'm sure nearly everyone is scared by The Strangers and The Grudge than Saw & Hostel.
