What do I wear for my first week at my 50's diner job?

So, my uncle just hired me to be a waitress at his new restaurant. The place has a 1950's theme, and is decorated with witty sayings mounted upon aluminum plaques and Coca-Cola memorabilia. It is very cute, and I am supposed to wear the outfit of a fifties waitress. Only problem? I don't exactly know what that is. I am handy with a sewing machine, and have to match my homemade uniform with a black apron. What can I make or dress up in to fulfill my uniform requirements? Also, if you have a dress or skirt idea, please, something without a pattern. I'm good with a sewing machine, but horrid with patterns. :)
