Why does the Chief Justice, not the President of the Senate, preside over the impeachment trial of a president?

Let's see, President, the highest elected office in the land, Chief Justice, the highest justice from the Supreme Court, the highest Court in the Land. See a connection here. If the president, the highest office in the land is on trial, it should be presided over by the highest justice from the highest court in the land.
